It’s sad that most primary schools no longer teach children the art of swearing. The kids found it fun to interpret all the loops and curls. Curse writing wasn’t just there to add some character and style to your writing – it was learning about something that could be beautiful and beautiful.

In the true sense of the word, calligraphy is not the right word to use, because as we discussed in this post about the difference between calligraphy and lettering: Lettering is the art of drawing letters, and cursing is the process of writing, not drawing.

The history of writing goes back thousands of years. Cuneiform was incised into clay tablets using traditional hammer and chisel tools, such as a pen. Egyptian writing was carved in soft stone. The etchings first represented pictograms (pictures of objects and information that needed to be recorded) and were created to represent the sounds used to talk about things on the spot.

After writing and communication progressed to the use of ink and handwriting, the style of writing began to change. Regardless of the language used, writers found it easy to combine letters into a single word.

Joint writing was used to record transactions, such as barter and sales, but they also used it when writing to each other. After the fall of the Roman Empire, monks and writers continued the tradition of writing, and since then, many alphabets or styles have evolved from one another, not always in a progressive line, as many began to explore other personal styles.

It made sense for monks who devoted their whole lives to writing religious texts to use some form of blasphemy. This led to the rise and dominance of blasphemous writing throughout the European/Christian world. Although styles of cursing differed from region to region – when monks used Roman Latin letters to simulate cursing, it was called the Carolingian Miniscule.

The Carolingian Miniscule was particularly effective. It was easy to read, included small letters, separated words, and used the first recorded example of symbols. So… grammar was born! If you’re a fan of historical dramas, you’ll see CM right away.

As more people learned to read and write, the price of paper began to rise. The production of paper dates back to the Han Dynasty in China, 105 CE. A farmer named Cai Lun boiled cotton, bark, and fish nets together to make cotton. Then, he would hold the waste in a sieve net to let it out and spread it lightly on a flat surface, allowing it to dry. Various forms of this technique were used over the next several centuries, from Europe in the Middle Ages to the Arab world via the silk route.

As paper became more expensive, scholars turned to writing on sheepskin, called vellum. Leather and vellum replaced Egyptian papyrus as the preferred medium for writing. To this day, paper still rules as much as we like to write down.

Because paper was considered a luxury, people looked for ways to get more words to fit on it. This led to the popularity of the writing dress, called Blackletter.

Century, books outside the religious sphere were written in this Gothic script. Carolingian Minuscule was simply the most labor-intensive and time-consuming to produce, even though CM was the most written.

The art historian, Millard Meiss, describes the Humanist Miniscule as follows: “Few periods in Western history have been able to produce a form of writing with such great beauty.” According to CM, Renaissance humanists and scholars who were interested in the revival of ancient Greece and Rome, revived what they took to be a better interpretation of ancient Latin styles. HM is modeled on ancient Roman Square Capitals.

Niccoli’s biggest change in handwriting style was to make an “a” in one case instead of using two cases. This is the accepted way of writing “a” that we still use today.

How is beautiful handwriting equal to having wealth and position? So many different factors have a hand in this view, based on the spread of writing from the monks. Knowing how to read and write was not something that concerned the penniless monks. Is leather expensive? Check. Exclusive education. Check twice.

By the early 1700s, good writing was associated with money, status, and leisure. This led to the Copperplate script, which was taught to those children who were lucky enough to have tutors. Formal training under the tutelage of great scribes was considered a skill worth learning by all classes. Even with the introduction of the printing press, people still had to communicate and record things in writing. They turned to Copperplate to do this.
