Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.
Next to the crossword is a series of questions or clues, which relate to the different rows or rows of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same number of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.
Some of the words will share letters, so will have to match each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.
The fantastic thing about crossword puzzles is that they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword puzzle for adults, or just a few words for younger children.

THEME: SHORTS / FILMS (37A: With 39-Across, some Sundance submissions… as a hint for four squares in this puzzle) – a rebus puzzle where four films with short *titles* are placed through the grid in four squares rejected:

Really hard not to like this one, but I found a way. Just kidding! It was fun, even if the theme was extremely easy to pick up. Maybe it was fun *because* the theme was easy to pick up – with some theme concepts you pick them up and then it’s just a hard march to the end, finding more of the same things you’ve already found, or perform more of the same “word game,” or whatever. But SHORTS / MOVIES !? Sign me up. That’s an Easter egg hunt I like to go on. If the concept is interesting, then I like to go through the rebus minefield, waiting for the completely non-violent and delicious explosions. I still say the late week puzzles are over-dismissed, presumably in the interest of them being solvable by a wider chunk of the paying public (a motivation that sounds *noble* but totally about $$ $ goes). I like my late week puzzles to walk me around a bit, in a fun, consensual way. And not this one. But it made up for it with the high entertainment value of the content. I liked that there were other movie-related answers in the grid, including one that featured one of the SHORTS / FILMS in question ( ME ET -CUTES ). There’s also Irene DUNNE (legend – more than just a crossword answer, kids!) and Oscar winner Rami MALEK (54A: Best Actor winner for “Bohemian Rhapsody”), whose name I named today in the first attempt knew how to spell. And I spelled his first name right too! I know there’s a publisher called TOR, after the [Craggy peak] of crossword fame, but is there a movie, or anything movie-related, called “TOR”? Reason I ask…
You can also see it backwards in PROTÉGÉ. If you solve long enough, the puzzles will start to whisper to you, and then finally you whisper back, and it’s a whole thing. If you’re a beginner solver, I’d say “get out (!) while you can,” or at least “never solve more than one puzzle a day”), but you’re gonna do what you’re gonna do, and honestly, if this is how my Crazy manifests itself – seeing things in grids that quote-unquote “aren’t there”, and ascribing meaning to random strings of letters – then I’m fine with it. Congratulations to this puzzle for its bite-sized fun, and for managing to cram Fritz Lang’s “M” into the grid seven times! Now that’s what I call a bonus answer!
