Word With Letters Found
Word With Letters Found – In the back of a quaint little shop on Thompson Street in New York’s Greenwich Village, the library’s Nancy Gross found antiquity and intrigue. Amid desperately dated $5 earrings and thousands of dollars worth of mysterious, dark oil paintings sat a cheap, retro frame holding what looked like a handwritten letter.
“When I first picked it up, I immediately noticed that it was dated 1804, that it came from Dumfries, and that it was signed ‘Jean Burns,'” said Gross, a folklorist at the American Folklife Center.

Having recently prepared a symposium on Robert Burns at the library and organized a major exhibition and festival on Scotland at the Smithsonian in 2003, Gross felt the letter warranted further scrutiny.

Robert Burns is considered the national poet of Scotland. Few poets have moved so easily between the worlds of rural folk poetry and urban literary circles. A talented poet in Scots and English, Burns was also a devoted collector of folk songs and tunes, a skilled musician and a talented poetess. He and Jean had nine children together, three of whom survived to adulthood.
Gross eventually walked away with $75 in the letter. When he got home and took it out of its plastic frame, he found a receipt attached. Dated 1970, it came from New York document dealer John Fleming and was addressed to Norman Armour, a retired U.S. diplomat living in Washington, D.C., stating that the letter was purchased on his behalf at an auction held by Park Burnett on March 26 for $71.50. On the back of the letter, he discovered that the “Ms” in the letter’s salutation was “Mrs. Riddell, believed to be Maria Riddell (1772–1808), member of the Lander family, friends of Robert Burns. There was no address or stamp to match the year and the fact that the note was probably hand delivered.
Further research led Gross to find references to the letter in two obscure 19th-century works on Robert Burns and to find the previous owners. He also consulted several document experts, eventually concluding that the letter was indeed authentic.
Wanting to give the letter a proper home, Gross donated it to the National Library of Scotland, where it will be displayed.
