Digitally, we can express words and language in a way that makes it simple and convenient to keep in touch with each other.
Five letter words are created by using only five letters together. These words usually contain a mixture of vowels and consonants (but mainly consonants will be used to make up the word). Vowels include the letters a, e, i, o, and u. Consonants refer to the remaining letters that make up the alphabet.

You may hear some of these words every day. Others you will probably hear less often. Some include descriptive words, others names, and the list also includes abbreviations.
“Sally” and “Sabin” are two five-letter words that start with S and are used as names. Other words on the list that are more familiar include “salon,” “salsa,” “saint,” “sad,” “sacks,” and “sale.”
When you hear the word “salon,” your mind probably goes to a hair salon. “Saint” is often used to describe someone who is considered to have good morals. “Sadness” denotes a negative emotion expressed when someone is disappointed about something. “Salsa” is often used as a dip or sauce and added to certain foods, such as the popular Mexican cuisine. “Sacks” can refer to large carry-on bags, and “sales” is often used when talking about fulfilling a business opportunity.

For long e spelling, students need to practice and be exposed to the words until they have mastered them. I will break down each of the eight ways to spell the long e sound to help you understand and teach your students the long e sound.

Most of these are vowel groups, so students should already know open, silent e, and vowel syllables. Students should also be able to find the base word, as some of these rules apply to the base word even if it has a suffix.

When you start teaching long e’s, you really need to focus on repeated exposure, lots of practice, and homophones. Learn one spelling pattern at a time, and as you master one, you can add another. It is much easier to learn to read them than to learn to spell them. Since they all sound the same and can appear in the same place, choosing the right spelling pattern can be difficult.
This will still require you to prompt them, but at least you won’t be providing an answer without thinking about it.
Decide on a guide word for each spelling pattern. This will be a word to alert students when they are unsure of how to spell a word with a long e sound.

Have students still divide the word into syllables first and try to eliminate some of the spelling options. For example, if they are trying to spell a word

Also, because there are multiple options, students are expected to make mistakes sometimes, and tell them so! It’s okay if they make mistakes as long as it’s another valid spelling option and not something that doesn’t follow any rules. With repeated exposure and practice, they will eventually internalize the correct pattern of spelling words.
Lots of practice and repeated exposure is the name of the game with the long e sound. Do different activities and repeat the words as many times as possible.

Create short stories to help anchor spelling patterns. – Combine similar words and create a short story using them to help students remember them. This is similar
, you could say ‘John was drinking tea on the beach while an eagle flew by’ or something similar. Draw a picture or create your own word picture poster with this spelling pattern and put it up in your room.

Dictation – This is another fantastic activity but I would do this after you have spent some time on the long e as it is more difficult for some students. Even when dictating words, give students a spelling cue, such as telling them it’s a vowel group or an open syllable. I often dictate words that have the same spelling pattern to avoid these problems.
Sorting – Sorting is always a good idea if you have multiple spelling options. You can play matching games like memory, just sort them into piles/columns or create any game that requires you to sort by a spelling pattern. This builds phonemic awareness, so it’s always a good activity for all students.
