Word Callers: How To Stop The Guessing
I was confused as to why my students, who loved to read aloud to the class and read well, could not understand what they were reading. Listening to Emily Hanford’s recent documentary podcast, “Losing the Words: The Flawed Idea That’s Teaching Millions of Kids to Be Poor Readers,” brought this issue to the fore for me.
When I learned how the English language works through the logic of the English language, I understood the root of the problem with my misunderstood “good” students. This documentary made me realize that I am not alone in this.
At a loss for words, students who read and miss (mispronounce a word) but are “adequate” are often thought of as fluent readers. However, what happens is that these students are good at predicting and predicting words.
My biggest moment was when one of my students, Aaliyah, always read aloud to the class, randomly coming up with an unknown word and saying, “that M word.”

I helped Alia verbally and let her continue, but I was now listening very carefully. I understand that it skips smaller words and replaces other words, but always replaces good guesses with words on the page. I started asking students to slow down or re-read the sentences, and I realized: they couldn’t understand! These students were unable to decode most of the words they “read”.
I think everyone agrees that words need context for meaning. however, context should not be used to guess what a word is. Students need basic phonemic awareness and systematic phonics skills so they can first decode words, then recognize familiar words, and use context and other information to find the meaning of unfamiliar words. Without this basic skill, students are left to guess or make connections on their own…or none at all.
I didn’t know then, but now it’s about studying. Knowing what I know now, it’s hard not to feel guilty when I realize how many students I could have helped. But we cannot teach what we do not know.
Now I try to share my knowledge with others. The most important thing I’ve learned is that not all students can make vowels intuitively, so this basic skill needs to be taught explicitly.

I recommend that teachers check out Hanford’s APM documentary “At a Loss” if you haven’t already. This is a great resource for anyone who wants to take a closer look at the science of reading and the evidence that research works for teaching reading.
