Words With Ow In Them 5 Letters – Long O can be a difficult sound to teach because there are so many different ways to spell it. But I’m going to break down how you can easily teach this phonics and all of its spelling patterns.

Words With Ow In Them 5 Letters
The o silent and spelling pattern is the most common way to write the long o sound so let me start here. Of course, students should be confident in magic and interview. These words are one word. Some examples of long o words with silences are:

In open letters, the long o sound is represented only by the letter itself. They can be monosyllabic but are usually 2 syllables or more. Examples include

. This is less common and can be seen in compound words within the root word. Because there are so few words, I teach these in groups and remind students that these are rare and short one-syllable words.
How To Teach The Long O Sound
When you start teaching long o, you should really focus on homophones, homophones, and homographs. Teach one spelling at a time and once it’s mastered you can add another. Learning to read these is much easier than learning to spell. It can be difficult to choose the right font design because they all sound the same and can be seen in the same place.
If students are familiar with all the long o spelling options and know the open syllables and the silent e words, you can teach them the process of determining the spelling of the word.
When students encounter a word with a long o and need to know which spelling pattern to choose, here are some questions to ask:
Then you can go through the most common options first. So that would be o_e or just o, then vowel groups.

If it’s a single word, it’s either o_e, a vowel group, or o. Find out where the long o sound is. If at the beginning try oa. If at the end, try ow.
If it’s more than one syllable, make sure it’s an open o, in which case it’s spelled just o.
This will take some practice, so try using the checklist below (available in my free library) to go over certain sets of words with your students a few times, then have them do more on their own. This is the same process they use with other long vowel sounds, so it’s a great skill for them to have.
Also, expect students to make mistakes sometimes because there are so many options, and tell them so! It’s okay to make mistakes as long as there’s no other valid spelling option and something that doesn’t follow any rules. With repeated exposure and practice, you will eventually internalize the correct spelling.

Picture Flashcards – Create visual graphics of difficult words, homophones and homographs. These drawing symbols help students remember which pattern to use. I suggest you do these using flash cards and keep them in a bag or box for reference. See an example below.
Sorting – Sorting is always a good idea when you have multiple spelling options. You can play matching games like memory, sort into piles/columns or create any game that requires you to sort alphabetically. This builds phonemic awareness so is always a good activity for all students.

Phoneme Grapheme Mapping – This is a great activity that identifies phonograms for students to practice. You can find a phonics and spelling with grapheme map book and follow the long o lesson or use my vocabulary list to do the same activity using sound boxes. See below for example.

Dictation – this is another wonderful activity but I do it after a long time because it is difficult for students. Also, when writing words, give students clues about the spelling, such as telling vowel groups or open syllables.
Games – Of course I always add games because it’s so easy to add a stack of flashcards to any game and make it educational! Use a simple board game to have students take turns taking a card and adding an activity, such as reading the word aloud and sorting it, or asking another player to write it down, or having them write it in the air. Word after reading aloud. Or print out a teacher-made game from my Long O word work along with many other games and activities.
Continuous Review – Remember to keep in constant review after learning these spelling patterns, so you don’t forget them. Using a sound wall is a great way to do this without taking any extra time.
