Forty-seven years ago, our ancestors were born on this continent, a new nation, created to be free, and dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal.” We are now engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation that was born and dedicated, can thus endure for a long time. We were met at the great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it as the last resting place for those who have died here for the nation to live. This is what we can do in all ownership. But in a greater sense, we can not sacrifice, we can not dedicate, we can not purify this land. The brave men, both alive and dead, who struggled here considered it beyond our poor power to add or hinder. The world will notice little and will not wait long for what we say here. While it is impossible to forget what they did here. Rather than for us who are still alive, we are here to dedicate the great work that remains before us – that since these honorable deaths we have increased our devotion to that cause which they have given. The last measure of devotion – which we here are very committed to. These dead shall not die in vain, for this nation shall be free, and the government of the people shall be by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. 26 Piercing without cracks: EAR CLIPS
