Several things conspired to make this the hardest Thursday I’ve solved in a while. First NOOB. Which was not spelled that way. Somehow (1A: Beginner, in lingo = NEWB ) (side note: what language? maybe name it? as it is, the clue seems to be missing a word). But even after cleaning up, I stared at the WHISE JUG and thought there was simply a type of jug I hadn’t heard of before. Maybe the constructors have one of those ridiculously massive and not properly curated word lists, and the obscure WHISE JUG was some 19th century relic that had found its way onto said list. I do not know. I just accepted that the answer was WHISPER . Also, I’ve somehow never heard of a KISHKA, which…how? (6D: Filled Jewish dish). KNISH, of course. KISHKA somehow got past me. So that just made me feel bad about myself (not the puzzle’s fault, obv). Also, the clue was weird and made me write wrong answers often. UNIONISTS before UNIONISTS were bad (17A: Organized Labor). Are THE FOLLOWING just … union members? Like me? I guess that’s an OK expression, but not good enough for me to enjoy your obviously deliberately misleading clue (when the debunking answer is stronger than your own answer, then the debunking actually works against you). Still not sure what the clue on BEAM does (13D: Big smile). BEAM is a verb. If I smile, I don’t have a beam on my face. I’d rather drink from a WHISE JUG than have a BEAM. But the clue means the answer *must* be a noun. So… the puzzle was very much a hit. It got less boring when I finally got the theme and realized that WHISE JUG wasn’t really something I was being asked to accept. But it remained rather sloppy on the track and (desperate-to-be-current) filler level. ROBOT KITS were absolutely joyless. Was really expecting something new and fancy, but got just … two words that maybe go next to each other. Not even sure what these sets are or why you buy so many. I think the theme is clever enough and certainly the bottom half was easier to enjoy / appreciate once I understood the theme. But only JOCKEY FOR felt properly original and interesting in response.
