Part of the clue will be a definition of the answer or tell you its meaning in a more or less direct way. This part will be either at the beginning or the end of the track. The rest of the clue will be in the form of a word game that will lead you to the answer in a more roundabout way. For example:
It is common to replace the clue word with an abbreviation in the answer, so “energy” here means E, as in E=mc2. Putting the E in Nice, the name of a French city, makes NIECE, which is also given by the definition of “cousin.”
When reading a hint, it’s usually best to start by guessing which part is the definition and which one requires you to play on words a bit. You’ll get better at this with practice, but an easy way to tell the difference is to look for pun indicators – words or phrases that are a sure sign that something mysterious is going on. In the examples below, the clues include only one type of pun, but you’ll often find that the clues combine more than one type.
Some letters or words in the clue must be rearranged to form the answer. Anagrams can be indicated by words such as bad or broken, or by words relating to change or movement. Emphasis is added below on anagram indicator words.

The answer lies somewhere in the clue. This can be indicated by a word such as hidden, or a word such as some or part. Again, the word indicator is highlighted below.
The clue refers to the word that sounds like the word in the answer. This can be indicated by words such as reported, heard or in a podcast.
If the answer has a double meaning, the clue could give you two different definitions. If the clue is only two words, there’s a good chance it’s a double definition. Very occasionally you can see a trace that is a triple definition.

A clue may refer to a longer word or phrase, part of which must be deleted to get the answer. Deletion can be marked as removed, lost, none, headless if the first letter is deleted, infinity if the last letter is deleted, heartless if the middle letter or letters are deleted, and so on.

The answer is divided into two parts, one inside the other. A clue can use words like in, inside, around, eating, covering, absorbing and so on.

Occasionally, instead of splitting into a pun and a definition, the entire clue functions as both a definition and a form of pun. In the example below, “violent” is an anagram of “furious,” but “violently angry” also works as an answer definition. Each puzzle clue has two parts: a definition of the answer and an indication of the literal composition of the answer through word play. Either half can be first, but there will always be a point where the track can split into these two parts. With two paths to the answer, you can expect the cryptic clues to be easier to solve than standard crosswords. But crafty creators cleverly join the two halves of the trail in ways that make them difficult to separate. Also, both works may contain words that appear on the surface to mean something different than what they actually indicate. For example, the word putter in a trace may appear to refer to a golf club, but actually means a dawdle or even a putter.
Clues are followed by a number or numbers in parentheses that indicate the length of the answer: (5) means it’s a five-letter word, while (2, 3, 4) indicates a three-word phrase like “I know.”
Here are eight common methods by which hints are given through puns and tips for spotting them:
In an anagram clue, half of the pun actually gives all the letters of the answer, albeit in a mixed order. Rearranged letters are always immediately preceded by or followed or immediately followed by a word or phrase indicating confusion, such as wild, drunk, mended, or confused. For example:

Look for a word or phrase that suggests a jumble and a word or group of consecutive words with the same number of letters as the answer.
In the parlor game of charades, words are performed to pieces; Similarly, some cryptic answers can be broken down into smaller words that are listed individually:
The TARGETS (“goals”) response can be divided into TAR (“sailor”) and GETS (“achieve”). Charades can also have more than two parts:

The answer BOTHERING (“interruption”) consists of BO (“Mrs. Derek”), THE and RING (“bell”). The clue tells you that ALLI (“friend”) follows TOT (“child”) to give the answer COMPLETE (“complete”). Sometimes the answer can be broken down into parts and displayed as a phrase. For example, TANGENT can be broken into TAN GENT:
Tips for spotting this type: Certain common word beginnings may appear, such as CON (“prisoner”), EKS (“ex” or “ex-spouse”) and IMP (“naughty”).
Some words can be seen as one word within another. For example, PATIENTS is the word TIE IN THE PANTS. A hint for PATIENTS may read:

The clue tells you to put the TIE (“make knots”) inside (“in”) the PANTS (“pants”). All container clues include some word or phrase that indicates which part goes inside another. For example, in, break, or fill tells you that part A goes inside part B. Holds, swallows, or encircles tells you that part A extends beyond part B. Here’s a sneaky example of the latter type:
Look for container indicators like the ones above, plus clutches, go-arounds, holds, wraps, etc. Note, however, that many container indicators can also be used to signal hidden responses. Read on!
