Fortunately, most of the letters of the alphabet have unique shapes, so no matter how you change them, you can’t get confused with others. For example, the letter m looks very different from the letter x, and f is unlikely to be confused with the letter z.

If your child starts to read and occasionally reverses letters while reading or writing, it is completely normal. It doesn’t mean your child has dyslexia or a reading disability. Gently correct and move on.

However, if your child is eight years old or older, has received early reading instruction, and frequently makes reversal errors, it is important to take action to address the letter confusion.

Be sure to teach your child proper spelling when learning to print. Doing this is crucial to prevent confusion.

When creating the letter B, first start with a stick, then a circle. The star shows the starting position.

To write the letter d, first start with the circle, then the stick. Again, the star indicates the starting point.

Have your child use a piece of lined paper to make it clear where the circle is in relation to the stick. Also, make sure your student doesn’t lift the pencil from the paper when writing confusing letters.

How To Help Students With Letter Reversals

If you are working with older students, it may be too late to prevent confusion. You may have had a few false starts in reading, and may have already confused these troublemakers. They may come across the letter B and misinterpret it as the letter D. You can read the word bad as dab, or fashionable as fab. To provide gentle correction, you can take out matching phonogram cards and teach the letters separately, but your student will still blend them. If that’s the case, read on for four effective ways to solve the problem.

The demos below are for editing b and d inversions (the most common letter inversions), but the same concepts can be applied to any letter or number. You may only need to use one of these methods, but for really resistant cases, you will need to use all four methods.

Please note that it is important to focus on only one letter at a time. Wait until that letter is fully recognized before teaching another letter.

If your child makes a b mistake while reading, look at the touch surface activity and air writing you did together. Point out the wrong letter and what does this letter say if you write this letter?

Multisensory Strategies For B And D Reversal

If your child can’t answer easily, ask him to draw the letter B using air writing. The letter sound (/b/- bat) should come easily this way. Then have your child read the word again.

Reversing letters means your child writes certain letters (or numbers) backwards or downwards. This is sometimes referred to as mirror writing. It is different from transposing letters, which means changing the order of letters.

The most common letter reversal is b and d, when the child writes for d or vice versa. Another common inversion is p and q. An example of an inverted inversion is m for w.

Spelling or mirroring is not necessarily a sign of dyslexia. Some children with dyslexia have problems, but many do not. In fact, most children who change letters before age 7 do not have dyslexia.

For older children who continue to reverse the alphabet, there are a few other possible reasons. A child can copy letters because he has a good memory of how to form them. Another possible reason is visual processing issues. In this case, a child may have trouble distinguishing how different images are (visual discrimination) or which direction they face (visual orientation).

Most children bounce back as they improve in reading and writing. By second grade, reversing the alphabet is common and fairly normal.

Because b, d, p and q are all the same letters. They just flipped upside down. As adults and experienced readers, we have learned that their position makes a big difference.

If your child is reversing letters frequently by the end of second grade, however, you may want to contact your child’s teacher. Get the teacher’s feedback on what is happening and talk about next steps.

There is nothing wrong with helping children learn to write their letters correctly at any age. Even if your child does not have dyslexia or any other problem, there is no harm.

If your child is diagnosed with a specific type of language or visual processing problem, the sooner you introduce letter reversals, the less likely the habit will be. Your child will be better off breaking the habit early.

Work on one letter at a time. For example, if your child is copying b and d, start with b. Don’t introduce it to your child until he has very little trouble. After that, you can work on other significant changes like p or q.

Do the same with numbers. Do only one time. When your child has more trouble with that number, you can move on to the next one.

When you focus on the letter, try to be more involved than your child’s feelings. This is known as multi-sensor approach.

For example, your child might say the sound B in the sand or “Sky write” while saying the sound B out loud. As your child practices, offer a strategy for remembering how to spell b, for example, “The bat comes before the ball.” (Meaning that the straight line of the bee or bat comes before the circle or the ball.)

If you still see letter changes at the end of second grade or the beginning of third grade, talk to your child’s teacher. More practice in letter formation at school will help your child improve. There are many worksheets on letter reversals, but many are ineffective because they are not multisensory. Remember that children who struggle with reading, especially dyslexics, need multi-sensory learning because they lack muscle memory and symbol imagery.

Now, this doesn’t mean that students who write backwards have dyslexia or a reading problem, because it’s a common mistake that young children make and outgrow. However, it is common for some students, and in those cases, this strategy can help them with mixed letters, mirror letters, and reverse letters.
