Graph Letters For Crochet
Graph Letters For Crochet – One of my first projects for the New Year is to host a crochet together! This is my first crochet together and I am so excited to share this crochet project with you. I decided to design a toddler/child sized alphabet afghan. The blanket will be made up of knitted squares that are worked from corner to corner. Each letter will be its own square that will be sewn together after all the letters are completed.
Don’t know how to knit a corner to corner (c2c) chart? Watch my two-part YouTube tutorial where I show you step-by-step how to draw my dog emoticon chart!

The finished blanket will be 4 squares by 7 squares. It will measure approximately 36 inches wide by 63 inches long (plus the outer border).

If you want your blanket to be reversible, you can carry the colors with you while you bathe. I show you how to do this in a video tutorial:
Stitch the pixel graphic using the corner-to-corner (c2c) technique. Use the traditional method of making three double crochets for each square. I chained 5 to start each new row (instead of 6) and chained 2 at the beginning of each square (instead of 3).
I decided that I wanted to have a thin border around each square. Not only do I think it will make each square look prettier, but it will also make it easier to sew the squares together (you just line up the stitches!).
Attach your white yarn. In each corner you will work (hdc-ch 1-hdc) and for each edge of the square you will (hdc-ch 1) between each of the individual “tiles” (the little squares that make up the whole chart).

I’m here to help you with this post on How to Follow a Crochet Pattern with Charts. If you still have questions, just comment below or email me at jessica@
So, to get started, take a look at the chart below. It is 30 blocks wide and 30 blocks high. Blocks can either represent a single stitch, like a single crochet, a group of stitches, or corner-to-corner blocks. The pattern should tell you what stitch is required/recommended.
I created this chart for my initial towel crochet pattern and each block represents 1 single crochet. So this pattern is 30 stitches by 30 rows. See the remaining letters and the pattern here.

Charts are worked left to right (if right-handed) for 1 row, then turned and worked from right to left for the next. And it worked from the bottom up. Row 1 will be considered the right side (RS) and row 2 is the wrong side (WS).
In this chart you will see that the first 7 rows are one color and you can choose white or any color you want. So you would bind off 31, sc in the second chain from the hook and each chain across. Then fill in your 7 rows.
Because we work in rows forward and backward. Row 8 will work on WS, from right to left. SC in first 11 stitches, change colors, etc…. Now this is where things can get tricky and messy if you’re not careful.
With color changing, I prefer to wear the lighter color (which means you drip it on top of it until you get to the next color change) but not the darker color because you can usually see it through the seams. Or, if I can see the lighter color, I’ll get a few different bobbins.

So what are bobbins?? You can buy clippers like these Clover ones, or use what I use…clips from the dollar tree! Take a notebook or book or whatever has some weight and attach your clips. Wrap yarn around the pegs. Like the photo below.
I wore the gray in the photo, so there is only black on the tables. But if it showed with wear I would have added some gray colored bobbins.
As you can see, you will crochet across and then pick up the yarn when you get to that color on the chart.
Change colors by completing the stitch all the way to the last step (for sc, 2 loops on hook) drop the color you used and pick up the new color. Finish the stitch with the new color by threading and working through both loops on the hook. Either leave the old color behind or transfer it by crocheting over it.

This technique is best done with the coils directly in front of you as you shower. When you get to the end of the row and flip the work over, flip the raspberries over as well (so I recommended pinning them to something sturdy). Spinning the machines every time you turn the work will keep things from becoming a tangled mess!
Continue working on the chart by throwing and picking up yarn. This may seem confusing at first, but you’ll get the hang of it quickly. Weave in your ends when you’re done, making sure to match the colors.

Another option is to do this in a hot pad instead of a towel! Do this by using a smaller hook. I recommend hook H 5.0mm. This will give stronger stitches. You can also make 2 and sew or stitch them together for extra heat protection! Perfect for putting those hot pans on your counter with.
Row 1: Insert the second part of the hook and each part through (30) works in the back of the chain. ch 1 and turn
Rows 2-30: sc across, following chart and changing colors as needed. Don’t end up with every color, use bobbins as described in this post here. (30) ch 1 and turn
Border – Ch 1, turn and move down the pattern side placing 1 sc at the end of each row. sc across the bottom ch, up the other side and across the top row 30. Join and finish.

If making as a hot pad, use hook H 5.0mm. Make 1 in the initial of choice. Make another one without an initial in the main color that was used. Sew or stitch the two together. This will give additional protection from heat. I do not recommend using it as a warm base as a single layer.
