The clue will include a definition of the answer or tell you the meaning more or less directly. This section will either be at the beginning or end of the clue. The rest of the clue will be in the form of a word game that will lead you to the answer in a more roundabout way. For example:

It is common for the hint word to be replaced by an abbreviation in the answer, so “energy” here means E, as in E=mc2. Inserting an E into Nice, the name of a French city, produces NIECE, which is also defined as “relative”.

When you’re reading a clue, it’s usually best to start by guessing which part is a definition and which part asks you to play around with the words a bit. You’ll get better at this with practice, but you can easily tell the difference by looking for wordplay indicators—words or phrases that are a sure sign that something mysterious is going on. In the examples below, the clues include only one type of pun, but you’ll often find that clues combine more than one type.

Some letters or words in the clue must be rearranged to produce the answer. Anagrams can be marked with words like bad or broken or words related to change or movement. Emphasis added below to anagram indicator words.

The answer is hidden somewhere in the clue. This can be indicated by a word like hidden, or a word like some or part. Again, the indicative word has been highlighted below.

The hint refers to a word that sounds like the word in the answer. This can be indicated by words such as reported, heard or in the podcast.

If the answer has a double meaning, the clue may give you two different definitions. If there are only two words as a clue, there’s a good chance it’s a double definition. Very occasionally you may see a clue that is a triple definition.

A hint may refer to a longer word or phrase, part of which must be removed to get the answer. Deletion can be marked as deleted, lost, none, unheaded if the first letter is deleted, infinite if the last letter is deleted, heartless if the middle letter or letters are deleted, and so on.

The hint refers to the word or words that spell the answer backwards. It can be marked back, turn, around and so on. If the answer word to the clue is down, the reversal can be marked up or up, etc.

THEME: ON THE KEY (48A: Dungeons … or a hint to “unlock” the four answers in this puzzle) – the four answers down intersect the string of letters “KEY”, which must be “rotated” 90 degrees to become part of the answers down for these answers to make sense:

Word of the Day: EBOY (41D: Gen-Z style with emo and anime influences) — E-girlsande-boys, sometimes collectively known as ase-kids, are a youth subculture that emerged in the late 2010s, particularly popularized by the video-sharing app TikTok. It is an evolution of emo, stage and shopping fashion combined with Japanese street fashion (such as anime, cosplay, kawaiiandlolita fashion) and K-pop fashion. Videos from e-girls and e-boys tend to be flirtatious and often overtly sexual. Eye rolling and tongues sticking out (a facial expression known as asahegao, mimicking climax) are common. According to Business Insider, the terms are not gender specific, but refer to two separate fashion styles, stating that “while the e-boy is a vulnerable ‘softboi’ and embraces skate culture, the e-girl is cute and seemingly innocent”. Several things conspired to make this Thursday the hardest Thursday I’ve tackled in a while. The first NOOB. Which was not spelled like that. Somehow (1A: Beginner, in lingo = NEWB ) (note: what lingo? maybe name it? as it is, it looks like the word is missing from the help). But even after I figured it out, I stared at the WHISE JUG and thought there was simply a type of pitcher I hadn’t heard of before. Maybe the constructors have one of those ridiculously massive and poorly organized word lists and the obscure WHISE JUG was some 19th century holdover that found its way into said list. I don’t know. I just accepted that the answer was WHISE Jug . Furthermore, somehow I have never heard of KISHKA, which … how? (6D: Stuffed Jewish food). KNISH, sure. KISHKA somehow bypassed me. So I felt bad about myself (not the puzzle’s fault, obv). Also, the help was weird and made me write wrong answers a lot. UNIONIZES before UNIONISTS was wrong (17A: Organized workers). Are UNIONISTS just … union members? Like me? I think it’s an okay term, but not good enough for me to enjoy your obviously deliberately misleading clue (when the misdirection is stronger than your own, then the misdirection actually works against you). I’m still not sure what the BEAM (13D: Big Smile) clue does. BEAM is a verb. If I’m smiling, I don’t have a RAY on my face. I’d sooner drink from a pitcher of WHISE than sport a BEAM. But the clue means the answer *must* be a noun. So… the puzzle was pretty much complicated. It was less drawn out when I finally got the theme and realized that WHISE JUG wasn’t really the thing I was meant to accept. But it remained at the level of clues and (desperately that it is current) fulfillment. ROBOT KITS was completely joyless. I’m really expecting something new and fantastic, but I just got … two words that could go together. You’re not even sure what these kits are or why you’re buying so many of them. I think the theme is clever enough and it was definitely easier to enjoy/appreciate the bottom half once I understood the theme. But only JOCKEY FOR seemed to me to be a properly original and interesting answer.

[Feeling impostor syndrome] is way, way, too specific a clue to DOUBT. Without ME- in front of DOUBT, it actually feels completely wrong. If I had heard of E-BOY , I had forgotten, and when I read about it (see the “Word of the Day” entry above), it was clear why I had forgotten. My brain was protecting me from things I shouldn’t have known. TikTok is getting a lot of rich tech people
