I know “Letters to Juliet” is a soppy melodrama, and I don’t mind it at all. I know the ending is a foregone conclusion. I know the characters are broad and comforting stereotypes. At this point, I simply don’t care. Sometimes we have personal reasons for reacting to a film.

“Letters to Juliet” is about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), an American girl who comes to Verona with her fiancé (Gael Garcia Bernal). He often leaves her to look for wine and truffles for his New York restaurant. She visits the house where Shakespeare’s Juliet is said to have lived. All of this is wrapped in unimaginably beautiful shots of the Italian countryside, the warmth of friendship between Sophie and Claire, and the many encounters with Lorenzo Bartolini, the name of the boy Claire loved long ago.
