Letters to Juliet has a refreshingly passionate romantic charm, but suffers from slippery dialogue and a lack of surprises. Read critical reviews

While visiting Verona, Italy with her busy boyfriend, a young woman named Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) comes across a wall of heartfelt holiday notes to Shakespeare’s tragic heroine Juliet Capulet. Finding one such letter from 1957, Sophie decides to write to its now elderly author, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave). Inspired by Sophie’s actions, Claire sets out with her reluctant grandson (Christopher Egan) and Sophie to find her long-lost lover. I know “Letters to Juliet” is a soppy melodrama, and I don’t mind it at all. I know the ending is a foregone conclusion. I know the characters are broad and comforting stereotypes. At this point, I simply don’t care. Sometimes we have personal reasons for reacting to a film.

“Letters to Juliet” is about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), an American girl who comes to Verona with her fiancé (Gael Garcia Bernal). He often leaves her to look for wine and truffles for his New York restaurant. She visits the house where Shakespeare’s Juliet is said to have lived. Below its balcony, women in love over the years have posted “Letters to Juliet” asking for advice.
Sophie finds a 50-year-old letter written by a young British girl about a Tuscan boy she met, fell in love with and let walk out of her life. Sophie writes to the girl, the letter surprisingly finds its way, and soon Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) and her grandson Charlie (Christopher Egan) arrive in Verona. So now, if we are seasoned movie watchers, we know what should happen at the end of the story.
All of this is wrapped in unimaginably beautiful shots of the Italian countryside, the warmth of friendship between Sophie and Claire, and the many encounters with Lorenzo Bartolini, the name of the boy Claire loved long ago. A hard-hearted realist suggests that Sophie help Claire check on a possible Lorenzo Bartolinis using the phone, but no. “Letters to Juliet” requires the three of them to meet the candidates in person, leading to a series of false leads that eventually lead to the real Lorenzo Bartolini (Franco Nero).
As it happens, this story evoked memories of romantic memories in my life. Once, in a small mountain town outside Rome, under a full moon, I stood in front of the balcony used by Franco Zeffirelli for his masterpiece “Romeo and Juliet” (1968) and heard Nino Rota hum his theme music to Zeffirelli. A few years later, I stood under the “Juliet balcony” in Verona with a woman dear to my heart, and saw the notes on the wall.

“Camelet” (1967) was the first set of films I saw before I became a film critic. On that set I met and interviewed Vanessa Redgrave, still 30, and Franco Nero, 26. They played Guenevere and Lancelot. They fell in love on the set, got married and had a child. They finally got married on New Year’s Eve 2006. Even earlier, Franco walked Vanessa’s daughter, Natasha Richardson, down the aisle when she married Liam Neeson.
So you see, when Vanessa falls in love with Franco and marries him 40 years later, when they play characters who meet 50 years later, it all boils down to Juliet’s balcony – what am I going to do, reader? I am helpless before such forces.
Vanessa Redgrave recently lost her sister Lynn. I met Lynn once in London. I went to her house for tea. This was not long after the success of “Georgy Girl”. My interview is lost in the past, but I remember the feeling of the day, Lynn sitting cross-legged on the carpet next to her coffee table, smoking and fond of an unknown kid her own age, Jolie, a famous actress.
I am away from the film. But I told you what you need to know about it. I want to observe that our reaction to every film depends on the person we bring to it. Pauline Kael said she went to a movie, the movie happened, and she wrote about what changed her after seeing it. This is quite valid. However, sometimes, we go to a movie, our lives have happened, and we write about what hasn’t changed.
