Step 5: Regular Vowel Teams (& Long Vowel Chunks Detour)

In open syllables, the long o sound is represented by the letter o itself. They can be words of one syllable but more often they are 2 or more syllables. Examples include

The spelling oa of long o usually appears at the beginning or middle of a one-syllable word. Examples include:

The spelling ow of long o usually appears at the end of a word or less commonly of two syllables. Examples include:

When you begin to teach long o, you must consider spellings, homophones and homographs. Teach one spelling pattern at a time, and when you get the hang of it you can add another. It is much easier to learn how to read these than to learn how to write. Since they all sound the same and can appear in the same place, choosing the correct spelling can be difficult.

When students are familiar with all the spelling options for long o and know the open syllable and the silent e syllable, you can teach them the process of determining the spelling pattern a word has.

When students come across a word with a long o and need to figure out which spelling pattern to choose, here are some questions they can ask:

From there, they can go through the usual options first. So that would just be o_e or o, then vowel teams.

If it’s a one-syllable word, they need to choose between o_e, a vowel team, or the odd choice of just o. Find out where the long o sound is. If it’s the beginning, try oa. If it’s at the end, try ow.

If it is more than one syllable, check if it is an open o, in which case it would be written as just o.

This will take practice so try using the list below (available in my free library) to go through a set of words with your students a few times, then ask them to do some more on their own. This is the same process they will use with other long vowel sounds so it is a good skill for them to have.

Also, because there are so many options expect students to get them wrong sometimes, and tell them this! It’s okay if they make a mistake as long as it’s another valid spelling choice and not something that doesn’t follow any rules. Through repeated exposure and practice they will eventually internalize the correct spelling patterns of words.

Picture flashcards – Create visual diagrams of trick words, homophones and homographs. These graphic cues really help students remember which pattern to use. I suggest you make these using flashcards and keep them in a bag or box for reference. See an example below.

Sorting – Sorting is always a good idea when you have a lot of spelling options. You can play matching games like memory, just sort them into piles/pillars, or create any game that requires you to sort them in alphabetical order. This builds phonemic awareness so it’s a great activity for all students.

I include 3 different long o sound planning activities in the Long O Worksheets and Activities.

Drawing a Phoneme Grapheme – This is a great activity that really isolates the grapheme for students to practice. Ordering – This is another good activity but I would do this after spending time on o because it is more difficult for the students. Also when dictating words, give students clues about spelling such as telling them it is a vowel team or an open syllable.

Games – Of course, I always include games because it’s easy to just add a bunch of flash cards to any game and make it educational! Use a simple board game where students need to take turns taking a card and add a task such as reading a word aloud and putting it together, or asking another player to say it, or even something as simple as having them write in the air. word after reading it aloud. Or post a teacher-made game from my Long O Word Work along with several other games and activities.

Regular Review – Remember to keep these spelling patterns in regular review after learning them, so that they are not forgotten. Using a sound wall is a great way to do this without taking any extra time.
