I put off writing a review of the Singer 9960 Quantum Stylist Sewing Machine because it has so many stitches and features that I thought it might intimidate beginners. Then I noted the price.

We all start in the same place, looking to sew basic, straight lines – facing our square rugs and rectangular place mats.

After that, it’s on to some minor alterations and maybe quilting. Once you are more comfortable, you can try sewing other crafts or want to make clothes for yourself or your family. (Baby clothes are a very popular project!)

However, if your sewing machine is only capable of doing a few basic stitches and doesn’t have many accessories, it may not be able to make the next level of sewing much easier. In fact, he may not be able to do that next level of sewing at all.

Quantum Stylist makes sewing as easy as possible with push button operations for everything including automated control, speed control and thread cutting. It has an incredibly sleek style, reminiscent of the Futura series where most of the controls are placed low on the panel giving you a sort of curve to meet you. This makes them very easy to reach during sewing. It also has one of the largest (probably the largest) LCD screens in this price range.

Some sewing machines have a lot of features but not a lot of work space. Not this one. It’s a serious sized machine with lots of extras and great potential.

The Singer 9960 first catches your eye because of the large number of sewing stitches – a total of 600 built-in patterns. Let’s break them down so you know what you’re getting.

A reference chart is listed on the flip-up top so you don’t have to dig out your manual every time you need to pick up a new stitch.

There is an automatic locking stitch for decorative stitches and a tack button so you can tie off your utility stitches.

In some cases, you may need to use stabilizer material to get the full detail of the decorative stitches to show – especially on thin material – a small step that is not uncommon for most machines.

This stitch collection can handle everything from basting to quilting to professional garment making but there are so many decorative sewing stitches that I had to ask myself what on God’s green earth would anyone do with all of them?! Is that too many? (Of course, after working with my limited set of 30 for over a year now, I’ve decided that it’s not possible to pick up too many stitches but it’s much easier to pick up too few stitches.)

Someone mentioned that the Quantum Stylist sewing machine uses the same size for both upper and lower case letters so they look funny. However, lower case letters actually look lower case and you can adjust the size of individual stitches in a combination pattern to make lower case letters even smaller if you want.

One of the Singer 9960’s strengths is creativity and customization. You can edit most sewing stitches in a number of ways. You can change the width, length and create a mirror image of the stitch. If you are working on the edge of a quilt and want to make two rows of beautiful stitches with each pattern facing in opposite directions, you can do this with a mirror stitch setting instead of turning your fabric around and running it. Another direction. This is helpful if edging in the other direction means trying to get a large amount of fabric down the neck of the machine.
