Themes Of The Screwtape Letters
The masterpiece of satire C.S. Lewis on the latest tests and techniques of Hell and Heaven’s Answer. “C.S. Lewis is ideal for the half-believer, for the good man who wants to be a Christian but whose intellect gets in the way.” – New York Times Book Review
Teaching C. S. Lewis: A Handbook For Professors, Church Leaders, And Lewis Enthusiasts
What if hell is organized as a brutal bureaucracy with managers and field agents? With Screwtape, the top manager and Wormwood’s uncle, a field agent experiments with a human patient he is assigned to secure forever. Hell shares no love, but Screwtape guides and guides his nephew.
In a series of letters, Screwtape offers practical advice to the young demon on the finer points of temptation, human weaknesses and shortcomings, and the disaster of his Christian patient. Although this certainly complicates things, the two infernal creatures won’t let that stop them.
From this very wrong perspective, C.S. Lewis delves into human nature, revealing some interesting, and sometimes embarrassing, tendencies. From insomnia to the “foolishness” of God’s love for humanity, Screwtape imparts his evil wisdom on Wormwood. Even though the mirror he holds up to humanity is dirty and broken, it still looks painful. Wit and parody mask a very serious analysis of what people do; and asking for the reader’s opinion, it can teach each of us how to resist the temptation and discouragement of the enemy!
Before-You-Read Activities: Learn about the devil in scripture, art, literature, and music. Personal concept of demonic art. Bible study on the temptation of Jesus. Watch interviews of veterans from WWII, Battle of Britain.

Although The Screwtape Letters is a novel about Christian morality, it is written from the perspective of evil-demons. It is important to understand why Lewis chooses to tell his story this way, and what the advantages and limitations of his form are.
Throughout the book, the devil Screwtape gives advice to Wormwood, his nephew, on how to do evil. In giving this advice, Screwtape makes observations about human nature and humanity’s potential for virtue. At the…
The Play Screwtape Will Be Presented By Plant City Entertainment
In Screwtape’s first letter to Wormwood, he tells Wormwood that the devil’s purpose must be to make one not think. C.S. Lewis argues that if one thinks critically and analytically about Christianity and religion in general, then that person will understand and embrace it. Although this idea seems simple, it is by no means…
Try as he might, Screwtape cannot understand love. As a result, Screwtape cannot understand why God created mankind, why he wants people to be good, or why he wants to reward them in Heaven for their virtue. Screwtape’s intelligence is impeccable, but his complete understanding of love means that he will never be a Christian. By exploring Screwtape’s misunderstanding of this basic human (and divine) idea, Lewis builds his theory of human love, both…
