Last day of real (virtual) face-to-face classes today, so I have to catch up, so this will be short. Long story short – it didn’t take me long to figure this thread out, and thus (roughly) takes any kind of theme energy, any chance of future surprise, completely out of the puzzle. I mean, once you get the hang of it, the rest of the threads are obvious (except for BNKRPT – I totally forgot it was a SPIN option … haven’t watched this show since high school, i.e. decades). Anyway, here’s where I was when the puzzle was basically over for me:

I took one look at that “MRVGR-” combo up there, then took another look, then realized, “no, those letters are all solid, something weird is clearly going on with the theme.” Then, since the MRVGR clue referred to 55-Across, I looked up 55-Across, and while the date didn’t tell me much, the fact that I was dealing with a “creator” and a “debut” told me a TV Show was included and Merv Griffin immediately came to mind (I wonder if young people know his name as much as I do. He had his own afternoon talk show when I was a kid). And that was it. You have that sound question as an anchor. The concept here is cool, but in the end the theme is something of a misnomer, firstly because I was basically done before I started, which made completing most of the other themes a rote exercise. But the biggest problem is the wording of the question. It really feels like “I WANT TO BUY A VOTE” is the phrase people are saying. It really feels that way. Here, the phrase is inserted into a question, purely for structural reasons (so it can be 13 letters long and dead-centered, and so “N” and “W” can be placed in positions that allow symmetrical crosses ( MRVGRFFN , WHLFFRTN).

Just a few sticking points. Surprisingly, the answer I struggled with the most was SEEDBED (25A: Basic job of a factory manager?). It had -EED- and went for GRASS. Then, later, VERB (!?). Is a SEEDBED just an area that was recently seeded? Oh, I see it is the ground that has been prepared for planting. OK. I’ve heard the term. But I still like CHERRY, which is definitely the job a “factory manager” does, and is a word in common use. I don’t know who the actor NEAL was, although looking at the pictures, I’ve seen him in a few things. He’s basically the “hey, *that* guy” of modern TV (I have a lot of them in the older movies I watch). It had -ETFISH and honestly had no idea what the first card was supposed to be (41D: Aquarium denizen). He thought there might be a species called JETFISH. But no …it’s a PET … FISH 🙁 Pat Sajak helped me there, which helped me finish the eastern section. SST gave me trouble (24A: ’03 marked “Pensioner”). Never flew in one, really wobbly on the dates when they were functional. I actually refused to anagram WINTER’S O’S and got SNOW TIRES from the cross (9D: Apt anagram of WINTER’S O’S). Something about having to stop my solution to rearrange the letters was insulting. Because I forgot “Bankrupt! ” was a SPIN option, not knowing FAN (60A: Geisha accessory) had me a bit in JP. After OBI, I have no idea about 3-letter Geisha accessories. FAN , you say? OK .The End.(Somehow this writing was not shorter than my regular writings; habit is a strong force…)
