Most solvers “start at the beginning” of the crossword, in the upper left corner of the grid, and go from there. It seems logical, but most puzzle solvers think they have to complete this part before moving on to the rest of the puzzle. I think it’s best to just take a quick look at that angle. If everything falls there, fine; But I prefer to go ahead and scan the rest of the puzzle, looking for clues (small groups of answers that I can immediately get to) that I can use to build on.

Once you are done building on one foothold, start working on another foothold area, and come back to this section later. I do this a lot. It keeps my frustration to a minimum and my attitude is positive since now I’m looking for opportunities, instead of wasting my time on a temporary roadblock. And, when you return to an area later, you’re looking at the problem with “fresh eyes,” eyes that are now able to see a solution that you had previously ruled out.
Very few of us have such a wealth of knowledge and such a quickness of intelligence that we are able to enter each entry in a single word on the first pages. Especially without the help of some of the letters that have already been filled in. Think how easy it is to figure out that the answer to “8 Across – Chasm” is ABYSS if you look at the grid _BY_ _
Instead of 5 spaces. So, how does one populate a grid with auxiliary lines? See the two suggestions below.
You know what I’m talking about: the clues you can find in a flash. Find them and fill them quickly! Each of these can be the beginning of a new foot to build on. Example from Spring Time 15×15:

While not all plural nouns are formed by adding an -s to the end of the word (for example, the plural of man is not men, but men), in fact, most are formed with an -s at the end. So, feel free, when you see a clue that indicates that the answer is plural, to put a temporary S in the square that ends the word. That S can be the initial or middle letter in the entry that crosses the plural word and thus, can help you find the answer to that cross-entry. For example, if S is the second letter of the three-letter word for venomous snake, ASP quickly comes to mind. Likewise with the entries that indicate are past tense verbs (most of them end in -ed) or third person singular verbs (they also end in -s). And, there’s a good chance that clues ending in -ing are likely responses to endings in -ing. Filling in the potential S, ED, and ING squares temporarily gives you more opportunities to build legs.
Below is a 15×15 puzzle grid for Springtime with some easy answers and each -S and -ED word filled in. (Click on the image below to view). By filling in these squares, you can graphically see where you have opportunities to build strong footholds from where you can start filling in surrounding keywords that have already been filled. If you focus your efforts on these areas with already filled lines, you will create small islands of filled squares that, as they grow, will eventually connect to each other. And, when that happens, tough admissions can be made.
Watch for clear and unambiguous directional cues in the clues. If you see “Abbr.” or “Init.” Drawn at the end of the clue, it tells you that the answer is an acronym like TSP or a set of initials like LSD. Or, more precisely, an indicator that, itself, uses one or more abbreviations may be asked for a shortened form of the word. Example: A response to a prompt that reads “big mail. grp.” DIV is an acronym for division. Some other examples of sub-directional cues in cues from Spring Time 15×15:
30 d. [“Over here!”] Brackets indicate that the answer is not a word you find in the dictionary, but a sound. In this case, the answer is PSST!
Kominers’s Conundrums: Can You Escape This Column?
40A. The condition of the wedge. “Stat” is short for statistics, which suggests that the answer is a shortened version of the term. In this case, the answer is ERA, short for earned run average.
64A. Arles A. You’ll see that it’s in multiple words when the answer is a single word in a foreign language. Arles is a city in France, so this clue is asking for the French word for the indefinite article “a.” Answer: UNE. Similarly, for the clue, “Night, in Nogales,” the answer is NOCHE. Or, for the allusion to “Mr. In Mannheim, “The answer is HERR.
Puzzle Constructors also include more important hints in their hints, which you may want to look at as well. Example from a springtime puzzle:
