Knowing how to write in cursive when doing calligraphy can be very helpful, but unfortunately, not everyone remembers how to do it, or is even taught how to do it depending on where they live.

In this guide, I’ll cover everything you should know and I’ll also give you a FREE WORKSHEET printable so you can start practicing right away! (Download them at the bottom of the post!)

How Do You Write Your Capital Cursive
If you went to school before 2010, chances are you were taught how to write in cursive. It was considered a writing procedure when the teacher brought out the ink pens and lined paper, and said the magic words: “Who wants to know how to connect the letters in words?”
It’s a shame that most primary schools don’t teach children cursive writing skills anymore. It was so exciting for the kids figuring out all those loops and curls. Cursive writing wasn’t just about adding some formality and style to your writing – it was learning about something that could be beautiful and elegant.
In the true sense of the word, cursive lettering is not really a properly used term, as we discussed in this post about the difference between calligraphy and lettering: Calligraphy is the art of drawing letters, and is a style of writing cursive, not drawing.
In Courses, just like in script calligraphy, we are writing letters in a group, one connected to another group. But there is no pressure sensitivity, because we are writing with a monoline tool for the most part. Of course, there are derivatives that show a slight stroke variation, but the main purpose of cursive is speed and readability. Unlike the slow speed, we use when writing Calligraphy.

Many people confuse cursive with script lettering, but as we talked in this post about the different calligraphy alphabets, there are 3 main families of alphabets: Serif, Sans serif, and Script.
Words in Script are written when all the letters of the word are linked together, and since cursive is a script style, many people use them interchangeably.
? Many people use that term to refer to writing in a script style, and not actually lettering. The shadow family with Cursive underneath is Script.
But don’t worry, we’ll cover it from the beginning, so we can understand a little more about the history, just like we did with the History of Handwriting in this post.

The history of writing goes back thousands of years. Cuneiform was used in wet clay tablets using primitive hammer and chisel tools, like a stylus. Egyptian hieroglyphs were carved into the soft stone. The etchings began to represent pictograms (images of the objects and information that needed to be recorded) and developed to represent the sounds used when talking about the objects instead.
After documentation and communication progressed to the use of ink and quills, the style of calligraphy began when writing was changing. Regardless of the language that was being written, it was easier for scribes to join the letters together in any compound word.
Partial writing was faster for recording transactions, such as exchanges and sales, but they also used it when corresponding with each other. After the fall of the Roman Empire, monks and scribes continued the tradition of writing, and since then, many alphabets or styles have evolved from each other, not always in a progressive line, since many of them began to explore more personal alphabet styles.

Everyone who used the cursive script made sense. Apart from offering the writer speed due to the infrequent pencil lift, it also caused the fragile feather quills to last longer, stay sharper, and splatter much less.
It made sense for the monks who spent their entire lives transcribing religious documents to use some form of cursive. This led to the rise and dominance of cursive writing throughout the European/Christian world.
