Rex has a night off to get REST (14D: recharge, so to speak) and recover from a cold, so you bring the blog to me (Laura) wife (60D: employee). A DEAL’S A DAL (13D: “We’ve agreed to it, so you’d better deliver”), said Rex, trusting that I won’t budge (57A: With 10-Nitch, go wild; 10D: See 57-across), and create a PR nightmare (64A: Big headache for company representative). I found it reasonably challenging, with a few missteps, and good stakes around every corner. A zone defense (12D: 2-3 or 1-2-2, in basketball) takes the approach, working through the NE and then diagonally toward the SW, then SE (preferring the four corners). Back up. NW, where things got marshy (47D: Boogie). I’ve had ITUNES radio fool me for a while — I’ve used APPS like (53D: Pandora and Spotify) (as well as the revived Napster), and only I HEART radio (15A: Alternatives to Pandora or Spotify ) vaguely heard). Also having a BOA instead of a WIG for 1D: Drag accessories.

One would have to have a TIN ear (20A: Difficulty gathering subtleties) to not notice both GOT TURNED ON (17A: GOT AMAZING) and FLACCID (42D: LIKE A WET NOODLE) on the same grid. become While I’m all for what film ratings people call “higher themes” and “bad comedies”, perhaps a touch of ARTINESS (30A: Pretension) would make this the work of a few youngsters. Topic: Hold Under the Fort — Three across the entries “lie” the word fort to the corresponding entries in the grid.

[SPOILERS] Following the advice of the god Apollo, Orestes kills his mother Clytemnestra to avenge the death of his father Agamemnon. Despite Apollo’s earlier prophecy, Orestes finds himself tormented by Erneas or the Furies to the bloodguilt arising from his matric murder. The only person able to calm Orestes from his madness is his sister Electra. To complicate matters further, a prominent political group in Argos wants Orestes executed for murder. Orestes’ only hope to save his life lies in his uncle Menelaus, who has returned with Helen after spending ten years in Troy and several more years amassing wealth in Egypt. (Wikipedia)

As the creator put 25D: Time and Energy Expenditure (EFFORTS) on this puzzle, I was determined to 40D: Sally ___ FORTH to solve it, which was only moderately challenging, given that I had Thursday Found out today to be my 18D: STRONG POINT (FORTE) — or at least, my favorite puzzles of the week. There’s always a moment in these “spillover” (my term) threads when you’re all, I know the answer and it won’t fit in that spot on the grid, and for me that moment was when I thought, I know what the wind speed scale is called, and Beaufort doesn’t fit there. But will it be a rib or something else? I liked the way the FORTs were in different positions in each timer: end, middle, start.

NW was the last and hardest quadrant for me — didn’t feel like STAVE (3D: Fend (off)) and COVE (4D: small bay) should be close together. RECTO (38A: right-hand page) is a handy (ha!) word from descriptive books in the middle of the grid. (The left-hand page is VERSO because it’s the back of RECTO.) LAND SALE (32D: Some real estate business) — Is that what people are saying? Or sell? Not so much that there was much trendiness in the filling, but it felt classic rather than dated. There was some dependency on AFORESAID (12D: mentioned earlier) fill in little pieces to hold things together — RUS HAB EEN UTE HOR RDS MDS — TIL OMG THAT’S TOO MUCH AT ONCE.

Hello, Crossworld. This is Evan Birnholz. It’s been a while since I last posted here, but I’ve been writing the Sunday crossword for The Washington Post Magazine these days. Most of the time my puzzles are standard crosswords, but this weekend’s puzzle will not be standard. That’s all I’ll say for now.

I enjoyed today’s puzzle for the most part. I solved it on paper and it seemed pretty easy for Friday, and then I saw a lot of people on Crossword Twitter posting screenshots of lightning fast solving times, so it seems I’m not alone in that assessment. I had a few hiccups here and there, like writing CABS instead of VANS in 3D: Circles at Airports, and failing to see the correct month in 35A: Natl. The month I signed up for the library card with the ??P in place — I think my brain started cycling through the months and then skipped through JAN/FEB/MAR in a split second. Then he put on a towel and said: “No, other symptoms will be easier than this.” They really couldn’t be easier than that; I would have benefited from spending a few extra seconds to come up with a SEP. For a month that ends with P. Stupid’s impatient brain solving.

My only major problem was in the southeast corner; It took a while to figure out this genius and there are more hard-to-fit names than usual like DEIRDRE ,KOENIG (although I got her name quickly by mentioning “Cerial”), and (in Especially for me) DAX. I’ve never heard of him, I’ve never seen “Parenthood,” and…..well, Dex is probably between 2,475 and 7,984 three-letter names, I’d guess. If you’d only asked me, I’d have guessed his name straight, although I irrationally like that it’s short for Diximos. A friend mentioned to me that she’s married to Christian Bale, and I know her from “The Good Place,” so that’s interesting. I’m a bit crazy about the DAX /XKES crossover though. I’m not much of a car buff, so I only know XKES from crosswords (47D: Classic Jaguar). If XKE and DAX
